Local milkman wins 'Good Egg' award

ALL WEATHER milkman award winner David Jones.

David Jones, who has been delivering milk round Bishop Monkton for the past 41 years, was awarded the ‘Good Egg’ Award at Stray FM’s Local Heroes awards ceremony. The large dazzling event was held at Rudding Hotel.

The award is ‘to celebrate an all-round ‘Good Egg’, an individual who goes to eggstraordinary lengths to help and support their community, charity or colleagues without looking for recognition’.

His award, sponsored by Betty’s of Harrogate, was one of about a dozen presented to ‘unsung local heroes’ at the event. David was recognised for his long unbroken service to the village delivering milk in all weathers and conditions - rain, shine and sometimes snow and even through floods!

When he started his deliveries in 1977 a pint cost just 8 1/2p a pint! Asked how he felt about the award, modest unassuming David said: ‘I’ve just been doing my job. It’s really nothing out of the ordinary’.Over the years he has worked alongside his wife, Christine, who accompanied him to the awards ceremony.

David said: ‘It was quite exciting. Three of us were shortlisted, and our names were flashed up on a big screen. It was a real shock when I was announced as the winner’.

David is a former Bishop Monkton Parish Councillor.

* * This is the second award won by a Bishop Monkton person this year. Recently Margaret Lodge was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Congratulations to both of them!
