The Great War

PART 3     THE BISHOP MONKTON MEN WHO WENT OFF TO WAR

The 54 village men who answered the call
to fight for King and Country

Our researchers have found that 54 Bishop Monkton went off to fight in the Great World War, depleting the labour force on the local farms and the Paper Mill.

The list reveals that several families had three or more sons taking part in the war  These included the Bowes, the Bellerby and the Hymas families.

The list shows that 11 Bishop Monkton men joined the West Yorkshire Regiment but others went to 20 other regiments including several Scottish Regiments, the Coldsteam Guards and one to the RAF.

Our list below  shows the full name of each volunteer, his rank, regiment and home address.

THE BOWES BROTHERS: Our picture shows John, Dave and  Edwin. All were uncles  of the late Eddie Bowes.

Edwin, as reported elsewhere, was killed in action in 1917.

Dave, born in 1890, served in the Northumberland Fusiliers and the 8th Battalion of the York & Lancaster Regiment, fought in the first and second Battles of Passchendaele, and later was moved to Italy with the 23rd Division and  fought on the Asiago Plateau and the Battle of Vittorio Veneto. After the war he worked on a local farm and later became a wood merchant. He died in September 1970.

John, born in 1882,  started out with the 5th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, later transferring to the Labour Corps and the Works Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. He was discharged from the army in March 1919 and died in Harrogate General Hospital in March 1956.

COMING NEXT:

TOMORROW we start to tell the stories of others who took part in the Great War who will be remembered by their families who now live in Bishop Monkton. They include stories of great valour, endurance and service. We start this section by relating the war experiences of
Eric Elsworth Winterburn, father of Val Ellis-Beech. He was in the Royal Marines and at one stage of the war lay injured for three days and nights in 'No Man's Land' and during this time gangrene set in and he had to have a leg amputated when he was brought back

                                        Remembered with pride
