Preserving our Heritage 2
Who can you recognise in this
Youth Club photo?
PHOTO 3
This week we bring you a group photograph of the Bishop Monkton Youth Club of years ago.
We think you should be able to identify at least some of the adults and children in the picture, although, of course, they will have changed a bit!
The Youth Club met in those days every Friday evening in the old WI Hall although many of the activities are somewhat different from those laid on for today's youngsters at the Methodist Youth Club which now meets at the Village Hall..
Now see if you can anwer at least some of these questions about the above picture:
1. How many of the youngsters in the above picture can you name?
(Do them in rows from left to right and enter a ? if you don't know anyone's name).
2. Who are the adult leaders and helpers shown?
3. Guess the date when this picture was taken.
4. When was this Youth Club disbanded?
Send your answers to EditorBMToday@aol.com or post or hand deliver answers to Editor, Little Orchard House, Boroughbridge Road, Bishop Monkton or phone 01765 677795.
WHAT WE'VE FOUND OUT SO FAR:
A number of you have contacted us to provide some of the names of those shown in Photo 3.
Mike and Sarah Worthington, who identifed most of those shown, wrote:'Wow, what a blast from the past the Youth Club photo is!'
But the most complete list came from Pauline Houseman, who helped run the group. Here is her list of names:
Back row (from left to right):
Glen Anderson, Clifford Blades, Lisa Houseman, Sara Houseman, Sarah
Knowles and David Howell.
Middle row:
Carole Goldthorpe, David Worthington, Audrey Rutherford, Alec Renton, Pauline
Houseman and Paul Birchall.
Front row:
Glen Turner, (not known), Victoria Goldthorpe and Louise Catlin.
Pauline reckons that the photograph was taken in 1982.
She is not sure when the Youth Club was disbanded because afterwards Eileen Craigie, who lived on Hungate, ran it for a while.
Can anyone put a name to the one person Pauline and everyone else has missed?
The picture was taken after the Youth Club raised money to buy a painting for the children's ward at Ripon and District Hospital. The money was raised from carol singing.
The presentation was made by the club President Alec Renton to Nusing Officer Audrey Rutherford.
We are grateful to Pauline for providing this photograph.
